Ownership

I have been listening, reading and developing my concerns and opinion on the welfare of our land, air and water that affect our food more closely in the last few years in particular.  During this time and still today, I am and have discussed without saying it in this way, where the ownership lies.  There is enough ownership to go around without continuing to point the finger or flip the middle one, to go around.

And to be fair and hopefully and completely understood, my statements will be direct, indirect and true to what I believe are grave concerns and to who truly should own them.  From the farmer, business and countries both large and small including the families from the urban, suburban and rural communities.  We all share in the food we acquire to sustain ourselves nutritionally and tastefully.

Recently I have been looking into President Trumps expected reductions in the federal grants and assistance to the states in many areas (from $4.3 billion down to $3.2 billion) for 2018.  I listened historically where states want to control or deal with many areas of their constituents concerns without federal meddling, and others petitioning the federal government to do something the state may not be doing, where they believe strongly they should.

My concern is that if benchmarked or otherwise crop production safety nets are in place for loss or under production, that there could be and perhaps decades of increasing dependency on being bailed out.  This can lead to less than efficient or intelligent practices having become commonplace. No, not everyone!

My point being, is that if the subsidies and assistance to farmers comes from the federal government, why wouldn’t the states be doing this?  And then take this further, why don’t they or aren’t the concerned enough to enforce the mitigation of negative environmental impacts of businesses, farmers (both food and animal) have within their state?  If waterway are polluted by these same businesses or farmers in or from a surrounding state, deal with it, find the problem, work with each other, and OWN it and fix it!

I have said this before and I believe in consistency.  We have not gotten to where we are today, overnight.  We as a people have either been busy, ignored, tried and failed, but have allowed decades of politics and bad decisions to leading to large corporations and conglomerates to control the source of the food we eat, the products we buy and diminish our human, animal, insect and global health.

If a state can be run like a family business, both economically, and with care for the entire family, all the while learning from or helping their close cousin neighboring states, why not.  Your brothers and sisters can be just down the road in strengthened community, and not a long drive and riddled with red tape slowing the commute, just to find he’s doing something else and doesn’t have time.  Own it.
