When Will We Learn

North Carolina is one of highly concentrated CAFO states in the country nearly 4000 waste lagoons, or storage pits, where hog and poultry operations store raw urine and feces until conditions present themselves for the operators to spray the waste onto fields. Most of these fields are lined with drainage ditches that directly connect to public trust waters.

Even during the best of climatic conditions, animal waste high in nutrients and fecal bacteria can make their way into streams and rivers via surface or shallow subsurface runoff. Some spray fields are underlined by drain tiles, or artificial drainage systems, which also allow for direct run-off into ditches and then to waterways.  The hurricane Matthew (as past hurricanes or extreme rainfall) CAFO blowout has again spread the contaminants into and around our waterways and land.

My continued struggle to take care of my family and our future, where I know God will take care of us even through these struggles.  I am ever concerned with the limited and deteriorating resources that we have to sustain ourselves.  The evidence is overwhelming that available land and precious water is becoming less available for nutritious foods.

It is even more difficult to educate my children on the normal chores, responsibilities and habits that will ensure they have a good foundation prior to being released into the world.  I cannot stop thinking of the 20 acre farm in which my sister, two brothers and I grew up.  My boys visit there infrequently but have an idea at least of the way of a small farm and the hard work that is done and the effort it takes to live in a way that is not urban. Part of me would like to return to it.  More so, every day.  Before it is too late.

Just think about this.  Millions of our population, living in areas where they have generationally not lived anywhere but the city.  Dependent on food trucked in and expected to be on the store shelf, in a machine or even delivered to their door.  When the drought or the contaminated food or the further overuse of our land limits or stops the delivery of food.  You will see, hear and be directly affected by the human being in hunger when the food shortage comes.
