Our Loss part II

There is no doubt in my mind that there is a dire need right now, for everyone to understand the catastrophic changes that have occurred and are continuing to occur. I have written about the CAFO’s and the detriment to the land and the corn crops that feed the animals we eat, along with the unsustainability and destruction to our land air and water. Now let’s look at this from a crop biodiversity view point.

In the beginning, well years ago,  About 7,000 species of plants have been cultivated for consumption in human history.

  • Approx 30 crops provide 95% of human food energy needs – four of which (rice, wheat, maize and potato) are responsible for more than 60% of our energy intake
  • 75 percent (some say just over 91%) of plant genetic diversity has been lost as farmers have left their multiple local varieties for genetically uniform, high-yielding varieties
  • 75 percent of the world’s food is generated from only 12 plants and five animal species
  • 4 percent of the 250,000 to 300,000 known edible plant species, only 150 to 200 are used by humans
  • 30 percent of livestock breeds are at risk of extinction; six breeds are lost each month

Basically, our widespread use and overuse of land to grow a less diverse crop for direct human consumption is actually killing the other diversities of plants. Even those crops that need the insects that pollenate and birds that eat bugs which can harm a plant/crop and they naturally nurture the plants, are dying off (bees, spiders…) or moving to a source of food more suitable for them.

Think about this, from the above say we have 30 crops from which we eat to sustain our daily lives. One year or maybe a couple there is a disease which drastically reduces or destroys 1 or 2 of these crops. With the Strain on our land and water, and not even considering the effect of climate change, we need to be concerned. You will, or you already are feeling the impact. Or you ignoring it because either you don’t believe it, don’t believe it will affect you, or you think you will be dead before it happens to you. I truly hope you are smarter or at least sincerely more conscious of what is happening literally around and to you.

  • Over the last decade, the world has consumed more food than it has produced
  • Food reserves are the lowest in 40 years

The biodiversity and its all-encompassing impact on us all us layered and interconnected to our entire planet. The years and centuries of incorrect concerns for what is needed for us all, not just the few who can profit the most, should be a wakeup call for ALL of us.

In Indiana, right there next to you there is a corn crop, can you see the trees around it, do you smell the flowers, or see the fruit trees or vegetable farms? No, not so much anymore. It will be more than a shame when you think back and say remember the vegetable stand on that one road in that one town we used to drive by. Just like the River you used to fish or swim in, it’s gone or nothing grows there anymore.

Please understand, this is not in any way against the farmer.  It is for the farmer, and the rest of us.
